- Description
- The promise of e-surveillance for alerting us to emerging infectious disease epidemics is being fulfilled. The exhilaration generated by these new tools must not deceive us into believing that they will solve all of our global surveillance challenges. They should not detract us from complementary investment in the health sentries located in rural communities across our shrinking globe. Because successful communicable disease surveillance depends on effective bidirectional information flow between clinicians at the periphery and communicable disease control units at regional, national, and global levels, now is the time to harness the e-revolution to establish and bolster the crucial surveillance links with peripheral health workers and to ensure simultaneous investment in developing their surveillance capacity.
